1. When you decided to open the estate to guests, what kind of experience did you hope to create? How did you want people to feel when they arrived?
The experience we hope to offer our guests is exactly the same one my family has felt for generations whenever we arrive at Quinta de Cima.
It is the feeling of coming home to a place where life immediately becomes calmer. A place defined by serenity. By beauty. By family. By friendship. By love. Above all, by a profound sense of peace.
Those are the emotions we hope every guest experiences from the moment they arrive.
Creating that feeling depends on many carefully balanced elements. The intimate scale of the hotel allows us to offer genuinely personal service, where every guest is known and welcomed as an individual rather than simply as another reservation.
Our independent villas make it possible for families with young children to enjoy the estate together while preserving the tranquillity that many couples and adult travellers seek throughout the rest of the property.
Our location is unlike any other. Surrounded by the protected landscapes of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, yet only a few minutes from Fábrica Beach and the historic village of Cacela Velha, the estate offers a rare balance between countryside, coastline and authentic Algarve heritage.
Architecture also plays an essential role. Every building has been restored with deep respect for its history and for the surrounding landscape, embracing sustainable principles while preserving the identity of the original agricultural estate.

2. Quinta de Cima spans almost 50 hectares of citrus groves and avocado orchards. How does this deep connection to the land shape the identity of Casas da Quinta de Cima?
For more than a century, Quinta de Cima has been recognised as one of the Eastern Algarve’s most established agricultural estates. Today, it remains a working farm, with nearly 50 hectares of orange, lemon and avocado orchards continuing a tradition that has been part of our family’s life for generations.
Agriculture has never been separate from life at Quinta de Cima. The estate has always been both a place of work and a place where family and friends came together to spend time, celebrate and create memories. That balance still defines who we are today.
I often think that previous generations understood something we have gradually lost. Life wasn’t divided so rigidly between work and holidays. People spent part of the year in the city and part of it in the countryside, moving naturally between different rhythms of life.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced a little of that way of living. Although it has become increasingly rare, I believe it is something many people instinctively long for.
That is precisely the feeling we hope to recreate at Casas da Quinta de Cima. Even if our guests stay for only a few days, we want them to experience the quiet transition from busy schedules to slower mornings, from constant notifications to birdsong, from deadlines to sunsets.
Luxury, in its truest sense, is often nothing more than having the time to notice the world around you again.
The orchards are an important part of that experience. They are not simply a beautiful backdrop. They remind us that nature follows its own timetable. Trees cannot be hurried. Harvests arrive when they are ready. The seasons teach patience, perspective and respect for time.

There is another belief that has always guided my family. None of us truly owns Quinta de Cima. Each generation is simply its caretaker. Our responsibility is to preserve it, improve it where we can and pass it on to the next generation in even better condition.

3. Luxury Slow Living has become an increasingly popular concept. What does it mean to you, and how does it shape the experience you offer your guests?
We live in a world that moves faster than ever. Technology has transformed the way we work, communicate and travel, making almost everything immediate. Yet, while our lives have become more efficient, I sometimes wonder whether they have also become less emotional.
I believe that, despite all our progress, human beings are still guided by emotions. And emotions cannot be rushed.
Like nature, they unfold in their own time.
That is why I believe true luxury begins by creating the conditions for people to slow down—not because they have to, but because they finally feel able to.
For me, Luxury Slow Living is not about doing less. It is about experiencing more. More presence. More awareness. More meaningful moments.
It is the pleasure of enjoying breakfast without looking at the time. Walking through the orchards simply because the light is beautiful. Reading beneath a tree. Listening to birds instead of notifications. Watching the colours of the landscape change as the sun sets over the Ria Formosa.
These moments may appear simple, yet they have become increasingly rare. That is precisely what makes them so valuable.

4. Casas da Quinta de Cima is often described as a boutique hotel. What does that term mean to you?
To me, Casas da Quinta de Cima sits somewhere between a boutique hotel and a charming country retreat. It is certainly not a guesthouse.
Guesthouses often offer a more informal style of hospitality, frequently centred around the owners’ private residence. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that approach, but it was never the vision for Quinta de Cima.
When I think of a boutique hotel, I think first of scale. A truly exceptional boutique hotel is intentionally small. Its size allows every guest to be welcomed personally, every stay to feel individual and every detail to receive the attention it deserves.
Personalised hospitality is not simply a service standard. It is the defining characteristic of a great boutique hotel. But size alone is not enough.
Architecture matters. Interior design matters. The landscape matters. Above all, every element should work together to create an experience that could not exist anywhere else. A hotel should reflect the identity of the place in which it belongs.
That is equally true of what many people describe as a hotel de charme, or charming country hotel. For me, that expression goes beyond architecture. It speaks of history. Of authenticity. Of heritage. Of a profound connection between the property, its landscape and the people who have shaped it over time.
That is exactly how I see Casas da Quinta de Cima.
We are a small luxury hotel built within a century-old family estate that continues to thrive as a working farm. The restoration respected the original agricultural buildings wherever possible. Many of the furnishings and decorative pieces have belonged to our family for generations. Nothing has been introduced simply to create a particular aesthetic. Everything has a history. Everything belongs.

If I had to describe Casas da Quinta de Cima using a single expression, I would probably choose a charming boutique hotel. Not because it is fashionable, but because it reflects our true purpose.

I believe the greatest difference lies in our purpose. Casas da Quinta de Cima was never conceived simply as a hospitality business.
It began with a commitment to preserve a place that has shaped my family’s life for more than a century and to ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience it in exactly the same spirit.
The hotel is the means to achieve that vision—not the vision itself.
Everything we do begins with a simple question: How do we protect the soul of Quinta de Cima while sharing it with others?
The answer has never been to build something bigger. It has been to remain intentionally small.
With fewer than thirty rooms, we have the privilege of knowing our guests personally. We recognise familiar faces. We remember conversations. We understand why someone has chosen to spend a few precious days with us, whether they are celebrating a special occasion, escaping a busy life or simply searching for a place where they can slow down.
That changes everything. Hospitality becomes a relationship rather than a transaction.

6. As you welcome guests from around the world, what do you hope they discover about this corner of the Algarve and its way of life?
More than anything, I hope our guests discover that life does not always have to be lived at full speed.
We have become accustomed to believing that every message deserves an immediate reply, every minute should be productive and every day should be carefully scheduled.
Yet the moment people arrive at Quinta de Cima, something begins to change. Without anyone asking them to, they slow down.
They spend longer over breakfast. They leave their phones behind when they walk through the orchards. They begin to notice the birds, the changing light, the scent of citrus blossom and the extraordinary silence that surrounds the estate.
I think that is one of the greatest gifts this part of the Algarve offers. It gently reminds us that there is another way to live.
Of course, there is also so much to discover beyond the estate itself. Within minutes, guests can wander through the elegant streets of Tavira, explore centuries of history and architecture, visit beautiful churches, browse independent shops or enjoy some of the finest restaurants in the Eastern Algarve.
Then there is Fábrica Beach and the breathtaking landscapes of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where every tide transforms the scenery and every season reveals something different.
For those seeking complete relaxation, the experience can be even simpler. A leisurely breakfast on the terrace. A massage. A swim in the heated pool. We are also fortunate to live in one of Europe’s most privileged climates. With around 300 days of sunshine each year, outdoor living becomes part of everyday life rather than an occasional luxury. The light, the blue skies and the mild temperatures encourage people to spend more time outside, reconnecting with nature almost without realising it.
But if there is one thing I hope every guest takes home, it is not simply memories of beautiful landscapes or exceptional beaches. I hope they leave with a different relationship with time. A reminder that slowing down is not about doing less. It is about experiencing life more fully.
